The Dream is Still Alive

The dream of winning Division 1 is still alive for The Brisbane Golf Club following the matches played over the weekend.

BGC defeated Oxley Golf Club away 14-7 and Nudgee Golf Club tied with Keperra Golf Club 10.5-10.5. As a result if BGC can defeat Keperra Golf Club at home in the final round of the season by more then 3.5 games we will win the Division 1 Pennant for the first time in as long as anyone can remember.

The ‘grand final’ will no doubt be one of the biggest Pennant matches in the 121 history of The Brisbane Golf Club and we encourage Members to put Sunday, 27 August 2017 into their diaries now so they can come out in force to support our squad. It’s a great opportunity to watch some of the best golfers at BGC attempt to create history.

BGC won Division 3 in 2015 and Division 2 in 2016 and a win against Keperra Golf Club would complete an absolute fairy tale.

Keperra Golf Club is the current Division 1 champions and are undefeated in 2017. The Brisbane Golf Club has only had one loss this year and that was against Keperra Golf Club away in Round 2 where we were comprehensively defeated 14.5 to 6.5.

The win against Oxley Golf Club was one of the finest of the season. It’s extremely difficult to win away, especially in Division 1, and to do by such a margin was a wonderful effort.

Our Juniors defeated Oxley Golf Club 4-1 and the win gives them a chance to secure the Junior Pennant in two weeks time if they can defeat Keperra Golf Club. Oxley Golf Club reversed the order of their Juniors to try to secure extra points overall which meant Jordan Hampson played their Number 1 at Number 5. Jordan put in a fine performance taking on their very best and should be proud of what he contributed to the team. In other matches our Junior Champion, Sam Slater won (9&8), Ben Steiler (6&5), Bailey Ittensohn (5&4) and Dylan Barraclough (8&7).

The Opens secured a valuable 5 points for the team, which again was a great result away from home in Division 1. Our Plate Champion, Joel Negline recorded his first win of the season 3&2 whilst Scott Bretherton was again inspirational at Number 11 winning 5&4. Stephen Cox, who was runner up in our Club Championship to Lawry Flynn, earlier this year and Kurt Carlson both recorded their fourth wins of the year. Kurt after missing Round 1 remains undefeated and has only once had to play a match past the 15th hole. Our fifth point was won by Jordan Lett who followed up on his impressive win at home last week to win 4&3.

The Masters started slowly in their top of the table match against Oxley Golf Club. The home team showed their quality early and at the turn looked like they would be handing our Masters their first loss of the season. However, the back nine produced a totally different story and the end result was one of the Masters truly best performances and a 5-0 scoreline. Both Gary Brodie and Warwick Oxenford won 1 up, Nicholas Woodley won 3&1, Stephen Deane won 3&2 and Brett Kinninmont won 2&1. The win secured the Masters Pennant for the fourth year in a row which is a wonderful achievement.

Once again a big thank you to all of our caddies and supporters who have provided great support to our squad in 2017. Special mentions to Doug Lukin and Phil Fraser our team managers and Renitta Flynn our team photographer.

The 2017 Pennants Season takes a week off this Sunday for the Queensland Men’s Stroke Play Championship and the Queensland Men’s Amateur Championship.

Members are welcome and encouraged to come out from 7am on Sunday 27 August 2017 to support our squad. We would like to see as many Members as possible in blue and white along the fairways.
