The Brisbane Golf Club will start its third consecutive season in Division 1 pennants this Sunday, 18 July when they play Keperra Country Golf Club at home. The two Clubs have fought out many close matches in recent years and this one is again expected to follow a similar script.
The season was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 and with a two-year gap in between matches we will see a number of new faces across Opens, Juniors and Seniors. While we have lost Club Champions Lawry Flynn, who has just turned professional, and Louis Dobbelaar, who is currently in the US, the Club is excited to see so many players representing the Club for the first time or after having some time away.
The squad have been picked on form following the recently completed Club Championships. All four Club Champions across A Grade, Plate, Senior and Junior have been named.
Our Open’s team is Lewis Clelland, Tom Deane, Wade Edwards, Eugene Estella, Zack Halpin, Jordan Hampson, Sam Howse, Luke Kjeldal, James Sammut, John Smoljko, Ilija Soldan, Sam Slater, Ben Stieler, Gavin van Peperzeel, Justin Wells and Conor Whitelock.
It’s pleasing to see three juniors from our last Juniors match including James Sammut, Jordan Hampson and Ben Stieler being named in the Opens. Gavin van Peperzeel is in line to make his debut while John Smolijko is likely to be names after several years away working interstate.
Our Juniors will feature both the 2021 Brisbane Junior Amateur gross and nett winners in Chris Somerfield and Harvey Palmer. Chris is enjoying a wonderful 2021 so far having also qualified for the Queensland Open earlier in the year. This will be the first time Chris represents the Club in Pennants since he joined in 2018. Demos Drakos and Eric Yeon could also make their debuts depending on final team selections.
Our Junior’s team is Praty Bharadwaj, Demos Drakos, Campbell Kerr, Harvey Palmer, Chris Somerfield and Eric Yeon.
During our time in Division 1, our Master’s team have performed exceptionally well and in 2021 we will need them to do the same. The team boasts plenty of experience with Stephen Deane, Warwick Oxenford and Phil Melksham all part of our back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018.
Our Masters team is Stephen Deane, Bruce Green, Craig James, Phil Lynem, Brian McKerr, Phil Melksham, Warwick Oxenford and Ash Sturmer.
In the other match this Sunday, Redcliffe Golf Club will play Pacific Golf Club at Redcliffe with the former looking to defend their title from 2019.
We once again encourage as many Members as possible to come out and catch the live action from 7am off both tees.
Live score updates will be available via our Facebook page.
