The Captain’s Report – April 2018

Welcome to the April edition of The Captain’s Report.

Autumn has arrived, which means the US Masters is in the air and golf season at the Club is in full swing. There are several upcoming events giving members of all abilities, aspirations, and categories a great opportunity to enjoy our great game and the wonderful golfing culture of the Club.

The course received more rain than was needed during February and March. This caused some interruption to the golfing program and difficulties for the course staff to produce the course to the excellent level we have come to expect day in day out. With some more favourable weather being forecast we are confident that the course can return to its best for the balance of the golfing season.

In this report, we aim to provide you with an update of the golf happenings around The Brisbane Golf Club as well as important news updates and what we can look forward to in the months to come.

I would also encourage you to visit the Home page of the website and to ‘like’ the Club Facebook page to get more immediate updates on latest news and results. Golf is a selfless game, we can’t always be playing at the peak of our own game, but it is great to celebrate others success and continue to celebrate our rich golfing history.

Enjoy the read, good luck in the important golfing events that are ahead of us and play well. Hope to see you at the Club and on the course.

Stephen Deane

Winter Tee Times

As you would be aware during winter we experience shorter days which reduces the number of tee times in our fields. Generally, this means that members will need to be patient and trust the waitlist to secure a game.

An SMS is sent to the Saturday field on a Wednesday afternoon to remind members who aren’t playing to pull out. This process was very successful last year to ensure the waitlist was cleared and resulted in members very rarely missing a game. Members are encouraged to trust the waitlist as we saw large movements last winter and these are expected again.

Throughout winter we will be doing our very best to ensure we have the maximum number of tee times available for members. We will also consider adding some lines later in the afternoon for members who may be happy to play less than 18 holes.

Eagles Nest Change

The Match Committee has decided to make a change to the Saturday Eagles Nest. The hope of this change is that it will give more players a chance to be successful by using holes 6 & 15 as well as 18. On the first Saturday of every month, the Eagles Nest will rotate between Holes 6 & 15, on the other Saturdays during the month it will remain on Hole 18. We will trial this for the remainder of the year and would appreciate any feedback.

Wednesday, 30 May – Claiming Cup

The Claiming Cup which is an annual match between The Brisbane Golf Club and Indooroopilly Golf Club will be held on Wednesday, 30 May 2018 at IGC.

The event was first played in 1967 and had its beginnings at Southport Golf Club. It was played in January each year in the early 60’s to provide golf and competition for many Members of both clubs who were on the Gold Coast for the school holidays.

In 1967 it was decided to record the winners and the trophy, a pewter mug was purchased. The mug was held in the losers’ clubhouse for the ensuing twelve months where any Member from the winning side could demand it to be filled for their pleasure. This ‘claiming’ is now symbolic and the cup is held by the winners.

BGC lost the event in 2017 at home 6.5 to 3.5 and it would be great to win it back on their track this year. To date, IGC has won the event on 31 occasions and BGC has won it on 21 occasions.

Members wishing to play can contact Joe or Reece in the Golf Shop to reserve their spot.
